HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO DESIGN A WEBSITE?

February 21, 2018

Creating a cool and appealing website doesn’t have to break the bank. During this day and age, there are countless options for almost anything a person can think about doing. Website design is no different. There are DIY options available to people that want to do it themselves or have the time to learn website basics.

Free options like Wix.com, Squarespace or Weebly, offer many beautiful design templates that are easy to manipulate. These sites only offer certain templates and design options for free; other, more advanced, options come at an additional price. Check the sites to see what items are offered free and what come at a price. Depending on what features are important, it may be a good decision to invest in a subscription.

It is also important to think about the time constraint creating a website can take. It can be time consuming to create a site, even if there is a pre-made template. A novice would also have to deal with the frustrations that sometimes come with starting a new, unfamiliar project. From personal experience, there is the potential for a lot of mistakes and redo’s with a self-made website.

Price Range:  $0-$60

Website designers are the crème de la crème when it comes to making a site look professional, ascetically pleasing, and user friendly. They also can cost a pretty penny. A decent designer worth the money knows how to use Wordpress or similar design programs, Adobe creative suites, has some coding knowledge, and has ideas that will set the page apart.

A designer would also have much more extensive knowledge of the upkeep it requires to keep a site going. There are steps to setting up a site that are bypassed in the free design websites, but an actual designer would know about domain names, website hosting, and FTP.

Connie Wong, a blogger and website creator, has an excellent guide to deciding whether paying someone is the right move or not. She states that the it “all boils down to

  1. Time

  2. Technical knowledge (or your interest to learn to code)

  3. Design skills (or your willingness to learn design)

  4. Money”

It is a little harder to put a price tag on a custom website. Every designer is going to have their own prices based off their skill set, experience, complexity of the project and time restraints. Evaluating and prioritizing these aspects will put into perspective whether a professional designer is the way to go or not.

Price Range: $500-$5000
